Siemens Partnership Brings Zero Waste to Landfill

World-wide engineering and technology company Siemens is a highly respected business with a reputation for being class leader in many of its core activities. To maintain this quality and reputation, Siemens must align itself with equally well-respected suppliers who are also at the forefront of their own industries.

So when Siemens Mechanical Drives were looking for a supplier to help them achieve their target of zero landfill, they chose Premier Waste Recycling.

Siemens Mechanical Drives moved its UK assembly centre from Bradford to new premises in Stourton, Leeds and it was officially opened in early 2011. Siemens is committed to greener technologies, energy efficiency and waste reduction throughout the site and its operations.

Wastes are taken from the site by Premier Waste Recycling Ltd and processed through the company’s state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Leeds. Thousands of tonnes of materials are processed at the MRF each week, resulting in separate outputs of metals, plastics, card and paper, glass, textiles and other recyclable materials “market ready” for re-introduction to the manufacturing sector.

Even the non-recyclable materials that are filtered out have a use. They are taken to the company’s Northampton Recycling Centre where it is turned into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) – a fuel substitute used in power stations and kilns instead of coal or oil. So with its MRF and SRF, Premier Waste Recycling Ltd delivers a “zero landfill” service to Siemens.

Allan Randall, Siemens’ Environmental and Health & Safety Manager at Leeds, is delighted with the results, both environmental and financial: “For us, being green isn’t actually costly. We are already saving around £2,000 per year in not putting anything to landfill. As landfill costs rise, so will our savings.”
