Michael Signs Off after 25 Years

Until a few days ago, Michael Lowry was the Workshop Supervisor at Durham-based Premier Waste Recycling Ltd, and one of the company’s longest-serving members of staff. He is now enjoying the start of his well-earned retirement.

Michael began his technician’s role in workshops in Birtley 25 years ago, for what in those days was called Durham County Waste Management. The organisation was sold on to the Martin Group in 2011 and became Premier Waste Recycling Ltd. Michael has been an integral part of keeping the company’s vehicles on the road throughout that time.

Michael’s extensive knowledge of HGV maintenance has earnt him the respect of everyone at the company, at every level.  After 25 years of maintaining fleet vehicles and machinery, Michael’s knowledge and experience is second-to-none.  He will be greatly missed, both as a character and as a valued member of the team.

At a Covid-secure presentation at Premier’s Drum offices, General Manager Tony Burnett celebrated Michael’s many years of excellent service.  Presenting the champagne and gifts, Tony commented: “These things are always bitter-sweet, we don’t want to lose him because he’s so good at his job, but he’s also a great bloke and we want him to have the retirement he deserves after all these years.  On behalf of all of us here at Premier we wish you a great retirement, Michael.  Go and enjoy more time with your wife, kids and grand-kids.”

A skip-load of retirement goodies!

Michael and his wife, Deborah, are keen on cruises and have already been to many places around the world together. No doubt there is more of that to come in his retirement. He also plans on seeing more of his beloved Sunderland football club (not a sentiment shared by all his colleagues!) Other interests of his include keeping his fitness levels up by using weights and running. He has also recently taken up an interest in wild swimming.

It doesn’t sound like a traditionally restful retirement! But it is typical of Michael to throw himself into things and give them his energy and enthusiasm.

We all wish him well.
